Bilharzia is a disease that occurs due to parasitic infection. It is also known as snail fever or Schistosomiasis, caused by the genus of flatworm species Schistosoma. When human skin comes in direct contact with fresh water contaminated with specific types of snails that are carriers of schistosomes, it causes this parasitic infection.
The eggs of Schistosoma are commonly found in freshwater sources when infected people urinate or pass stools in the water. These parasites enter the human skin and reach the blood vessels to produce eggs, which later pass through the intestines and the bladder to cause this infection.
Theodor Bilharz was the first person to reveal the causes of this medical disease during the year 1851, and this parasite infection was named Bilharziosis or Bilharzia after him. This disease usually affects people living in regions like the Middle East, East Asia, South America, the Caribbean Islands, and Africa.
When this parasitic infection infects a person, it is not easy to treat it with the help of simple home remedies. One should consult a doctor immediately once infected by these parasitic worms. However, opting for home remedies to treat infection would help improve the immune system and enable it to perform its functions optimally.

Is bilharzia curable?
The drug that is used for patients suffering from schistosomes is praziquantel. A single dose of this medicine can cure the condition by as much as 65-90%. The excretion of eggs is reduced by nearly 90% in patients not cured by a single dose. This drug is also used in lactating as well as pregnant women. The drug helps not only in the initial stages of the disease but also in advanced-level patients. The drug has little effect on re-infection. A schistosomiasis vaccine is being developed now, which could prove to be a boon for people living in infested areas.
If the patient is not treated in time and eggs remain in the body for long, there could be severe effects as mentioned below –
- Bladder bleeding
- Ulceration in bladder
- Damage of Liver
- Kidney damage
- Cancer of bladder

MY MOTHER- IN – LAW WAS DIAGNOSED WITH BILHARZIA ABOUT THREE MONTHS AGO, CAN ANYONE PLEASE GIVE US SOME ADVISE??????????????
Miranda, its been 7 yrs since you posed your question about your mother-in-law.
Im very curious to hear what happened? Is she cured? Did she suffer much internal damage?
Also what area of the workd does she live in and how long do you think she had it before seeking treatment?
If shes in the US, did she have trouble convincing a medical professional to take her seriously.
Were her veins swollen, sore? I had an unrelated MRI (ovarian mass) and the tech could not inject the dye into my vein.. she said to me, “hmmm thats weird its like your veins are stuck together or in the wrong place.”
I can’t get my primary care dr, my gyn or loma linda university medical center’s ER to take me seriously.
My primary physician even wrote a note in my chart, “Patient said she thinks there are worms inside her.”
At my subsequent appt, he started off by recapping the previous appt, “so do you still think you have worms?” He then administered a psychological exam and advised me that I suffer from severe depression and wrote that in my chart. Its been almost a year. Some days im barely able to walk as if my kidney bladder liver and/or intestines have been damaged and or perforated.
So im interested to hear anything you might be able to share about your mother in laws personal experience.
The other thing is I sleep non stop .. 16.. 18 hours .. lose track of the days and I have very visual bizarre dreams.
Until this came to be I was very healthy.. walked 5 miles every day.. happy energetic .. I had a 16-yr radio job .. very outgoing, ppl person. Now im merely existing .. I don’t go anywhere, make up excuses .. dont talk to anyone .. haven’t even told my mom or aunt .. the 2 most important ppl in the world.
Im lost and I am afraid this is killing me but I can’t anyone to take me seriously. I even take specimens in. One dr said “I wouldnt know where to start, or who to call. If you want I can get my staff to make some calls.”
I must have close to a thousand photgraphs. At least if this does kill me .. someone will see that I really was/am sick
I am not the originator of this post, but have/had the same problem. After going through 5 doctors, I finally found one who has helped me and prescribed praziquantel. I am working my way through recovery now, after having this bug in my system for 8 months. My advice to you is to find a physician who practices integrative medicine. It is important to know that traditional tests do not detect many parasitic infections! Good luck, and I hope you get diagnosed correctly.
It would be nice if amounts of the herbs to use and how to prepare were given.
WHY THERE NOT MORE AWARENESS OF THIS DISEASE?! I BEEN FEELING DEATHLY ILL FOR 10 YEARS AND I CAN DISTINCTLY RECALL COLLECTING THE TONS OF SNAILS AT MY GRANDMOTHER WITHOUT WARNING.. NOW I HAVE TO WONDER IF THIS IS THE CAUSE AND WTF I’M SUPPOSED TO DO ABOUT IT?! THESE REMEDIES HELP BUT HOW DO I KNOW WHEN I’VE TAKEN ENOUGH?!
can moringa also cure bilharzia?
