Chicken pox, a viral infection is very contagious and is a common disease affecting people of all ages. In children, the severity of the problem is less as compared to adults. It is transmitted through air (sneezing or coughing) or through physical contact with the sick person. Pimple – type eruptions appear all over the body, containing fluid and look like blisters. Later on they turn into crust and fall off. Itching sensation is felt. If one scratches, then it could result in scars and infection.
Home Remedies for Chicken Pox
- Catnip tea that is sweetened with molasses is very useful. Fever comes down.
- Prepare tea using the following ingredients:
- 1 teaspoon of coltsfoot leaves.
- 2 tablespoon of queen of the meadow.
- 2 tablespoon of marigold flowers.
- 2 cups of boiling water.
Mix all the ingredients in a non-metallic pot mix and let it sit for 20 minutes. Have 1 cup a day.
- Mix 1 teaspoon of witch hazel leaves.
- 2 tablespoon of marigold flowers.
- 1 cup of water.
Let them sit overnight. Apply it on rash and it will relieve the itch.
Other Home Remedies for Chicken Pox
- One can go in for homeopathic remedies such as Antimonium crudum, Pulsatilla, antimonium tartaricum, sulphur, rhus tox.
- Some powerful herbs are St.John’s wort, ginger, pau d’arco, burdock root, goldenseal and echninacea.
- Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration. One must also take fresh juices.
- Add ginger to a tub full of cool water and have a bath for about 30 minutes.
- Brown Vinegar – Add half cup of vinegar to a warm water bath. It reduces skin irritation.
- Pea Water – Water of green peas is useful in reducing the irritation caused by chicken pox. The water in which one cooks green peas can be used.
- Oatmeal – A bath of oatmeal lessens the itch caused by chicken pox. Cook 2 cups of oatmeal in about 2 litres of water for around 15 minutes. Put the mixture in a cloth bag (prefer cotton) and tie the top with a string. Float the bag in a tub full of warm water and swish it till the water turns turbid. Be careful that the bag does not tear. The child suffering from chicken pox can play around in the water, while the pouch remains in the tub.
- Baking Soda – This can control the itching sensation. Put some baking soda in a glass consisting of water. Sponge the affected child with it till the soda dries up on the skin. This will prevent the child from scratching the eruptions.
- Carrot and Corainder – Soup made up of coriander and carrots is beneficial in the treatment of chicken pox. Take 100 gm of carrots and 60 gm of fresh coriander and cut them into small pieces and boil them for sometime. Discard the residue. Take the soup once in day.
- Herbal Tea – Mild sedative tea can be beneficial in treating chicken pox. The tea can be prepared from herbs such as chamomile, basil (tulsi), marigold as well as lemon balm. Add a little cinnamon, lemon and honey to the tea. Sip it slowly several times in a day.
- Honey – Smear honey on the skin. It will help heal the disease within three days.

- Loss of appetite.
