There are several reasons for a person to experience chest pain. Finding the origin of this pain is a challenging task for even a doctor. Out of the several possibilities, gas can cause chest pain. Gas is formed in the digestive tract by swallowing of air or due to the breaking of undigested food in the colon by some bacteria in the large intestine.
The chest and the digestive tract are separated from each other by the diaphragm. As the pressure of the gas formed in the abdomen rises, the diaphragm is pushed up. This results in the experience of pain in the chest.
Generally, a pain caused by gas in the chest should go away within a couple of hours. Some of the age old home remedies can prove handy in dealing with this discomfort at odd times. But, the persistence of this condition should be brought to the attention of the family physician as early as possible.
Gas Chest Pain Treatment:
- Four to five garlic pods can be taken along with milk to get relief from the pain
- The trapped gas in the digestive tract can be made to come out of the body by burping and belching. This can be done by drinking a glass of water containing bicarbonate of soda
- Ginger tea is an age-old remedy for getting relief from gas discomforts. The roots of ginger can be grounded in a power. They can be mixed with boiling water and the preparation can be consumed as a tea for two-three times a day. Adding of honey for taste is optional
- A pinch of Asafoetida spice can be mixed with buttermilk and taken in. This simple remedy is very effective in providing relief from the chest pain caused by gas. It helps in digestion of the food and further prevents the formation of any gas in the intestine
- Coriander seeds can be chewed whenever a person experiences symptoms of chest pain due to gas. It is an effective preventive measure as well
- Intake of foods less in carbohydrate and high in proteins is an effective preventive step against gas pain. Beano, Lactaid and Lactrase are some of the best known over-the-counter available non prescribed medicines which treat gastric complaints
- Drinking sufficient amounts of water every day and exercising regularly keeps the body free from constipation and complaints of indigestion. These two conditions are the major culprits for the occurrence of gas chest pain
- Overeating or delaying the intake of meals as per a routine schedule should also be avoided as a healthy lifestyle habit
- Garlic pods – Take a glass of milk and add 4-5 pods of garlic to it. Eat the pods and drink the milk. You will get gas pain relief
- Soda Bicarbonate – Take a glass of water and mix bicarbonate of soda in it. It will increase belching and burping. This will allow more gas to escape out of your body
- Avoid soft drinks as they can cause more gas in the body
- Avoid gassy foods like cabbage, potatoes and beans
It is extremely difficult for the doctor to pinpoint the cause of the chest pain as formation of gas in the stomach. Whenever a person has prior experience of this condition, it is handy to note down the experienced symptoms and tendencies. It helps in identifying further discomforts as recurrences of gas chest pain. In this way, the already known prescribed medicine can be taken by the patient and relief is felt much earlier.
