A canker sore on the tongue is a condition that can’t be ignored as it hurts a lot while eating, drinking and speaking. Various conditions can result in a sore tongue associated with pain and burning on the tongue. Pain over the tongue is termed as ‘glassodynia’ and inflammation can be found on the back and sides of the tongue or maybe, throughout the tongue.
There are a number of causes that can be related to the soreness of the tongue and the common ones include dry mouth, dehydration, intestinal disorders, chronic diseases, thrush, fever, inflammatory bowel disease, emotional and hormonal changes. There are some foods that can cause allergy and thus, canker sore on the tongue and these include oranges, strawberries, chocolate, eggs, nuts, cheese and coffee. These foods are rich in acidic content and thus, should be taken in limited amounts. Inflammation over the tongue can damage the taste buds and tiny sensors present on the tongue.
Home Remedies for Sore Tongue
- Glycerin: Glycerin can be used to treat sore tongue. It should be applied on the affected area of the tongue. Its application not only helps relieve lesion, but also alleviates pain.
- Butter: Application of butter on the affected part of tongue provide a soothing relief.
- Honey: You can prepare a concoction of honey with some roots and leaves of peepal tree. Make a paste by grinding them together and apply on the affected part of the tongue.
- Gargle: Gargling with warm salt water helps in cleaning the mouth and thus, fastens the process of healing canker sores. It should be done four to five times a day when sore is present.
- Papaya: When you regularly face the problem of sore tongue, you must consume papaya on a daily basis as it helps keep sore away. Apples and banana are also known to avoid sores problem.
- Curd: Including curd in your diet helps provide you with required vitamins and also helps cure burning sensation.
- Vitamin C: Foods rich in Vitamin C such as broccoli, muskmelon, yellow and red bell peppers and cranberry juice helps relieve from sores. Oranges are also known to provide relief from sores, so these foods should be included daily in diet.
- Turmeric Milk: One of the best home remedy for sore is to drink a glass of warm milk with half teaspoon of turmeric twice a day. This remedy will help cure sore faster as it provides nutrients which help in the healing process.
- Alum: Take a piece of alum in a frying pan to dehydrate it and then crush it to powder. Mix this powder with some honey and apply this paste over the affected area.
- Teabag: To reduce pain from the sore, place a wet teabag on the affected part of the tongue.
Precautions
While you have a sore tongue, you might avoid some of the foods that might aggravate the discomfort. Avoid all types of acidic foods like pineapple and avoid toothpaste if it is giving discomfort and change the brand to something mild. A sharp or a broken tooth might also cause discomfort, visit a dentist to get yourself checked. Along with these, you must avoid beverages, alcohol and smoking to avoid the problem of sores happening again and again.
